Karl was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps upon graduation from Wabash College in 1980. He served in a variety of command and staff positions across Asia, Europe, and North America. He completed his MBA at the International Business and Education Research program at the University of Southern California in 1994, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in 2005. He works in the human resources field, and earned the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification. He has consulted for teams such as Panda Restaurant Group and the Orange County Business Council. He currently serves as the Corporate Relations representative for the Orange County Business Service Center, which operates under the Orange County Workforce Investment Board. He speaks and writes on the rapid creation of global workforces, workforce shifting of demand curves, and the profitable hiring of Veterans globally. He lives in Orange County, California and enjoys snowboarding with his son and sailing with his daughter.
